Trump on Wednesday criticized Democrats for trying to “sell” a narrative about him as a racist and blamed them for a lack of progress on issues like gun control.
The president made the comments in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity and his running mate, Mike Pence, who has said the GOP is in the midst of a “race war” and needs to address race issues head-on.
The interview came on the heels of Trump’s first public comments on race since taking office, when he blamed Democrats for “selling” a false narrative that he is racist.
The White House press secretary said Wednesday that Trump and his administration have not seen any “unprecedented” increase in the number of people of color killed by police, but they are concerned.
The administration is working to ensure that those killed by law enforcement are not disproportionately African American, the spokesman said.
